Hymn to Shiva ShaktiParam Shiva, Shiva Shakti, Thou art themother divine. Grant me Thy devotion, removeall obstacles and show Thy might.
Thou art the transcendental super energyof the nature of absolute bliss. Thou art the rootenergy of the universe and the ordinary natureof the embodied.
Thou art the power of universal ambition, all encompassing knowledge, again Thou art theuniversal power of execution.
In the form of Brahma, Thou artresponsible for the creation of the world; in theform of Vishnu, the world is sustained by Theeand again Thou take the form of world destroyingpower.
In the garb of Maya, Shiva, the ultimateTruth is concealed by Thee, but in the form ofDivine grace Thou revealth the ultimate truth(Shiva). Again Thou art the independentsovereign power.
Thou art the Energy in the form of threeGunas or mental moods, and Thou the rulingpower above these Gunas. Thou art theconscious power of Shiva.
Manifestation of the mind, intellect andego are the wonders of your power. Thou art theall limiting power.
Thou art the five sense powers, the fivepowers of action. Again Thou art the fivefoldprana (vital force) in the human being.
Thou art the five subtle and the fivegross elements, and Thou the power in a mysticsound formula.
Thou art the four stages of manifestationof articulate speech. Again Thou art the sourceof primal sound ‘OM’.
Thou art the concealed serpent power atthe base of the spine. Thou art responsible forher play in the middle sushumna channel.
Thou art the very form of nectar in thespiritual centre at the crown of the head. AgainThou art all effulgence.
Manifestation of form out of formless isThy miraculous power. Thou art knowablepower…. My adoration to thee.

Ardhanareeshwara/Ardhanari is an androgynous deity composed of Shiva and his consort Shakti/Parvati, representing the synthesis of masculine and feminine energies. The Ardhanari form also illustrates how the female principle of God, Shakti is inseparable from the male principle of God, Shiva. Ardhanari in iconography is depicted as half-male and half-female, split down the middle.

Ardharnarishvara

I offer obeisance to the God and Goddess, The limitless primal parents of the universe. They are not entirely the same, Nor are they not the same. We cannot say exactly what they are. How sweet is their union! The whole world is too small to contain them, Yet they live happily in the smallest particle. These two are the only ones Who dwell in this home called the universe. When the Master of the house sleeps, The Mistress stays awake, And performs the functions of both. When He awakes, the whole house disappears, And nothing at all is left. Two lutes: one note. Two flowers: one fragrance. Two lamps: one light. Two lips: one word. Two eyes: one sight. These two: one universe. In unity there is little to behold; So She, the mother of abundance, Brought forth the world as play. He takes the role of Witness Out of love of watching Her. But when Her appearance is withdrawn, The role of Witness is abandoned as well. Through Her, He assumes the form of the universe; Without Her, He is left naked. If night and day were to approach the Sun, Both would disappear. In the same way, their duality would vanish If their essential Unity were seen. In fact, the duality of Shiva and Shakti Cannot exist in that primal unitive state From which AUM emanates. They are like a stream of knowledge From which a knower cannot drink Unless he gives up himself. Is the sound of AUM divided into three Simple because it contains three letters? Or is the letter ‘N’ divided into three Because of the three lines by which it is formed? So long as Unity is undisturbed, And a graceful pleasure is thereby derived, Why should not the water find delight In the floral fragrance of its own rippled surface? It is in this manner I bow To the inseparable Shiva and Shakti.

I offer obeisance to the God and Goddess,
The limitless primal parents of the universe.

They are not entirely the same,
Nor are they not the same.
We cannot say exactly what they are.

How sweet is their union!
The whole world is too small to contain them,
Yet they live happily in the smallest particle.

These two are the only ones
Who dwell in this home called the universe.
When the Master of the house sleeps,
The Mistress stays awake,
And performs the functions of both.

When He awakes, the whole house disappears,
And nothing at all is left.

Two lutes: one note.
Two flowers: one fragrance.
Two lamps: one light.

Two lips: one word.
Two eyes: one sight.
These two: one universe.

In unity there is little to behold;
So She, the mother of abundance,
Brought forth the world as play.

He takes the role of Witness
Out of love of watching Her.
But when Her appearance is withdrawn,
The role of Witness is abandoned as well.

Through Her,
He assumes the form of the universe;
Without Her,
He is left naked.

If night and day were to approach the Sun,
Both would disappear.
In the same way, their duality would vanish
If their essential Unity were seen.

In fact, the duality of Shiva and Shakti
Cannot exist in that primal unitive state
From which AUM emanates.

They are like a stream of knowledge
From which a knower cannot drink
Unless he gives up himself.

Is the sound of AUM divided into three
Simple because it contains three letters?
Or is the letter ‘N’ divided into three
Because of the three lines by which it is formed?

So long as Unity is undisturbed,
And a graceful pleasure is thereby derived,
Why should not the water find delight
In the floral fragrance of its own rippled surface?

It is in this manner I bow
To the inseparable Shiva and Shakti.
